was shocked when a friend of mine told me that Shinoa Blackie whom I knew very well form the Babalu Bar was the victim of a shooting incident at the Cueva Bar. As usual, rumors where coming from every directions and all different.
One thing was certain, a German lunatic who I used to see daily was the culprit. He always seemed to be an oddball, but who would expect such insane action because his dogs supposedly got poisoned – a normal practice here.
Crime Report by Shiona Blackie:
Around midnight on the evening of Sunday, March 6, walking home with my two friends Steve & Magenta, we stopped by La Cueva Bar to drop of a bicycle of the owner that Steve had borrowed. The bar wasn’t open, so the three of us sat down in the peace and quiet to chat a few minutes.
My two friends had told me of an incident in Cueva the previous evening, when the barbecue man from the neighbor restaurant had came in, swearing and accusing them of trying to poison his dogs. Steve and Magenta were unnerved by the incident and expressed concern that this was going to become an issue, the last thing anybody expected were the events that followed.
We were about to leave La Cueva around 12:15am when the aforementioned barbecue man burst in through the back door and began shooting a couple of shots at random. The weapon was so small and the sound so dull that I thought it was only a pellet gun, nevertheless, my instinctive reaction was to hide under a table.
The man was shouting something at Steve and Magenta who had fled behind the bar then took aim at me crouching on the floor and fired. I could feel I’d been hit, but it was as though somebody had just punched me in the back really hard, I still didn’t think it was a real gun. I didn’t even think I was bleeding. I heard more shots fired, but I didn’t dare look up from my crouched position. It was due to Steve’s amazing reaction of picking up an empty ice box to deflect the shots that prevented complete catastrophe as the shooter had aimed straight for their heads. During this scuffle, Magenta came down beside me on the floor. Her arm was soaked in my blood, it was then I realized how serious things were.
The shooter then threw the gun at Steve and said “Kill Me!” only to find out that all the bullets the gun held had been fired. They sat me in a chair, feeling dizzy and nauseous was when it really began to hurt. I wasn’t aware of much at this point, there were onlookers; everything was chaos. What subsequently made me more angry, was that some lowlife thief took the opportunity to steal my bag as I lay there bleeding.
Dr. John arrived in less than 10 minutes and whisked me off to the clinic on a golf cart. He spent all night operating, stabilizing my condition, removing the bullet, cleaning out the wound; I was conscious the whole time and maintained good spirit, at no point did the thought cross my mind that I was going to die. Bullet- a 38, had traveled 21cm entering just below my shoulder blade and stopping at the other side of my spine, I still can’t get over how unfeasibly lucky I was that the bullet did not enter my lung, did not pass through my spine and left only muscle damage which is healing remarkably.
We were all lucky, someone entered that tiny bar with a loaded gun and intent to kill, no place to hide and all exits blocked but did not manage to kill anybody.
Where is Utila going when tourists are shooting tourist. Perhaps its time to screen our visitor’s, natives and tourists a little better to avoid further blood shed. More law and order should be enforced. Let’s not give our divers par excellent paradise a bad name by criminals triumph over decent citizens.
