Team Slice & Dice – Ilias Scott, Herb Morici, José Funez and Phil Raw – took the grand prize at the third annual Roatan Rotary Club golf tournament on a very hot afternoon at the Black Pearl golf course in Pristine Bay April 20.
Slice & Dice also won the “four-ball scramble” at last year’s tournament.

Sixteen four-person teams competed in the tournament, with each player paying $125 to participate. Additional funds were raised through drink sales and raffle tickets. Proceeds support community service projects on the island.

Club Treasurer Edward Ake said the golf tournament was the second most important Rotary fundraising event of the year, after the Christmas Gala.

Participation was down somewhat from last year, but the tournament raised $8,000 from registration fees alone. Last year’s tournament raised $15,000 from all sources.

Pristine Bay, Diamond International, Tropical Air Conditioning, Anthony’s Key Resort and Tranquil Seas donated prizes for the raffle, with tickets going for $10 each. Istmania donated beer and rum, and Pepsi donated soft drinks for the drink sales. Cable Color paid for the lunch and RECO catered the after party. The donations kept costs down so that almost all money taken in would go to the Rotary.

Bay Islands Equipment Rental, Roatan Life and South Shore Zipline paid to sponsor specific holes on the course.
Second prize, actually awarded to the team that finished third since it was the third year of the tournament, went to the home team from Black Pearl, winners of last year’s “Best Ball” award.

Ilias Scott took the individual award for male participants; Mandy Croucher was the top female performer.
