Roatan Youth Claim Central American Basketball Title
A group of young athletes from the Roatan Bilingual School (ESBIR) claimed the Central American U-12 (12 and under) basketball title at a tournament in Guatemala in late July.
The ESBIR team, coached by Raymond Cherington, emerged undefeated against national teams from El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. They had previously claimed the Honduran national title through a series of competitions on the mainland during the previous few months, earning the right to travel to Guatemala to represent Honduras at the regional level.
The players, coaches and parents did some grassroots organizing to raise the funds needed to send the team and chaperones to Guatemala for the tournament. They stayed several days with the other youth basketball competitors, as well as athletes competing for regional titles in other sports at an amusement park and hotel complex.
The team received a hero’s welcome at the Galaxy ferry terminal on Roatan July 27 from excited friends and family, who organized a surprise homecoming celebration at El Boske in West End, where they shared laughs and stories over pizza.
The team was scheduled to appear on television the week of July 28 and receive recognition from government officials. West End Divers and the Roatan Marine Park, in cooperation with other local dive shops, will be offering the team free SCUBA diving courses.
The team wishes to thank the Direccion Ejecutivo de Deportes, Serrano’s, Sugar Creations, Jackson Photography, Keena Haylock Law Firm, Island Shipping, West End Divers, Roatan Rentals, Deliciosa Creamery, Eldon’s Supermarket, Roatan Marine Park, Las Rocas, Roatan Rotary Club, Good Samaritan Men of the Methodist Church, Plaza Mar, Infinity Bay, Martin Merino and many individual contributors for their support to make the teams participation in these tournaments possible.
