On January 25 Punta Gorda’s Lazio faced Coxen Hole’s Union Isleña. It was the second round of stage playoffs for Roatan, and Lazio persevered 1:0 with a second half goal scored by number 11 Jonathon McLaughlin.

While Diamond Star from Diamond Rock took first place in stage one of the 2008-09 island football season, Lazio placed second-just one point off the leader. This is an admirable achievement for a team that was reborn after a five-year-old hiatus.

Lazio’s Middlefielder Orion Dilbert, Forward Jonathan McLaughlin and defense Henrik Murillo are some of the team’s most talented players. “They play a lot of beach ball,” said Lonny McLaughlin, the team’s director, trainer and manager, of Lazio’s training habits. The financial support needed to have the team going comes from Punta Gordans.

The 1-a division was again dominated by Saint Helene’s Estrellas. There are ten teams in the island’s 1-a league (15-22 year-old players), twelve teams in the 1-b league (15-24 year-old player), and five teams in the 1-c league (15-30 year-old-players). [/private]
