Strong pitching by Cuny Miller and home runs from Johny James and Dean Pinnace propelled the Sandy Bay Pirates to a 12-2 victory over the Giants, also of Sandy Bay, in the sixth and final game of the Roatan Insular baseball league championship series August 12 at Sandy Bay Field.
The Pirates will now represent Roatan in the Honduran national baseball tournament in September.
The Pirates jumped to an early lead in the final game, chasing Giants starting pitcher Kirk Stewart with a series of extra-base hits, including a two-run homer by Johny James. Orvin Ramon came in to relieve Stewart, but the Giants could not erase the early deficit as Miller went the distance and Pinnace added a three-run shot in the 7th that put the game out of reach. With the Pirates up 12-2, the game was called under the league’s 10-run knock-out rule.
Earlier the same day the Giants, who entered the day’s action trailing 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, jumped to an early lead and held on to win 11-4 and force a sixth game. Edison (Pupu) Bodden struck out five and went the full nine innings to get the victory, helping himself with an early home run. Sherman Allen added a solo home run in the 6th. Johny James and Ernie James each hit solo homers in a losing effort for the Pirates.
In winning the pennant, the Pirates, who had a league-best 24-5 record in the regular season, avenged losses to the Giants in each of the last two championship series.
The Giants finished the regular season 16-13 but advanced to the finals by sweeping the second-place Flowers Bay Eagles, owners of a 20-9 regular season record, 3-0 in a best-of-five first-round series. The Pirates beat Kool & the Gang of Gravel Bay (15-14 in the regular season), 3-1 in the other semi-final series.
The teams split the first two games of the series in double-header action July 29, with Johny James getting the win for the Pirates 24-6 and Edison Bodden pitching the Giants to a 16-5 victory. The Pirates swept both games August 5 to go ahead three games to one.
