[private]The Roatan Pirates Rugby Club traveled to Guatemala City in September to compete in an eight-team seven-on-seven tournament, advancing to the semi-finals before losing 12-10 to the Nicaraguan national team, the Barbarians.
The Pirates advanced to the quarterfinals by finishing third in a four-team group in round-robin play. They then thrashed the Santa Rosa squad from Guatemala 24-0 to advance to the semis. Teams from Costa Rica and El Salvador also competed in the tournament, which was sanctioned by the International Rugby Board.
The Pirates will travel to Tegucigalpa November 17 to play the Nicaraguan national team again as the latter prepare to compete in the Consur games in Costa Rica in December.
Pirates manager Matthew Harper said most other teams competing in the tournament had been playing together at least two years, whereas the Pirates began practicing only five months ago and played their first competitive matches against other squads only in August.[/private]
