The Pirates, owners of a league-best 24-5 regular-season record, advanced to the finals July 22 by eliminating Kool & the Gang (aka los Tranquilos) of Gravel Bay, who finished the regular season 15-14, three games to one in a best-of-five first-round series. The Giants (16-13) swept the second-seeded Flowers Bay Eagles (20-9) in the other best-of-five series.

The league champion will likely be crowned by August 12.

The Pirates’ Johny James won the regular-season home-run title with a dozen round-trippers. Four other players, all of whom will compete in the league championship series, tied with 10. The Giants’ Orvin Raymond, who was the first of the four to reach 10 homers, was awarded the second-place trophy. Others with 10 homers were Sherman Allen of the Giants and Joseph James of the Pirates.

The Pirates led the league in team home runs with 69.

Clay Williams of the Eagles won the regular-season pitching crown with nine victories, followed by the Pirates’ Cuny Miller with eight. Miller and teammate Tony Brown, who had four pitching victories, were the league’s second-best pitching duo with 12 total wins. First-place went to the Eagles’ Clay Williams and Grova Webster with 13. [/private]
