Three Roatan athletes will put on Honduran blue to represent the country in a regional beach volleyball tournament in Toluca, Mexico, June 4-9.
Cuny Miller, a multi-sport island athlete, will compete in the men’s tournament, together with his partner, Walter Sanchez, who is from Puerto Cortes. Miller is also a pitcher for the Sandy Bay Pirates baseball team in the Roatan Insular league.
In the women’s competition, Roatan duo Gisselle Brady and Christi Etches will represent Honduras. Etches is outreach coordinator for Roatan Marine Park and daughter of Daine and Bill Etches, who own the Sundowners Beach Bar in West End. Brady is the daughter of Bill Brady, who owns Carambola Botanical Gardens on Roatan, and among other things coaches the Roatan Seastars girls team that represented Honduras at the Central American sub-13 tournament last year in Panama.
The June tournament in Toluca is the fifth of 14 circuit tournaments to be organized in 2014 as part of the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) Volleyball Confederation’s Beach Volleyball Continental Tour. NORCECA is the regional qualifying body for both the Olympics and World Championships in both indoor and beach volleyball.
Subsequent circuit tournaments will be held in Toronto in July and in the Dominican Republic and Cuba in August.
Etches said she and Brady would have to vie with the former national representatives to see who goes to the future competitions. She expected they would compete in five national tournaments this year.
Miller said he and Sanchez needed to line up sponsors to enable them to compete in additional tournaments.
