The 2014 Roatan Insular baseball league season kicked off in April with four teams contesting to claim the title won by the Gravel Bay Marlins last October.

After two weeks of play (games were rained out April 20), the Sandy Bay Pirates were the only undefeated team at 3-0. The Pirates lost to the Marlins four games to three in last year’s championship series. Kool & the Gang, also of Gravel Bay, was in second place with a 2-1 record. Kool was eliminated by the Pirates in last year’s playoffs after finishing the season 21-18.

The defending champion Marlins sported a 1-2 record, and the Sandy Bay Giants, the only team not to qualify for the playoffs last year with a 13-26 record, were winless at 0-3. Before last year’s disappointing season, the Giants had played in the championship series in each of the previous three years, winning titles in 2010 and 2011 before losing to the Pirates in six games in 2012.

Johny James of the Pirates led all pitchers with a perfect 2-0 record through the second week of play, and his teammates Earnie and Joseph James topped the league tables with two homeruns each.

Double-headers are played most Sundays in Sandy Bay, Coxen Hole and Gravel Bay.
