The May 8 Los Fuertes high school football finals had almost as much screaming and excitement as the May Day parade a few days before. The finals were played at the Los Fuertes football stadium in both the girls and boys categories. Seven teams participated in the boys’ tournament and five teams in the girls’ tournament.

In a first match, Merino’s Adventist Center girls’ football team took on Adventist School of French Harbour and almost annihilated their opponents 9:0. Nekicia Martinez scored six goes and Siani Gentle scored three for the Adventist team. For the boys championship, the Merino’s Adventist Center boys team took on Santos Guardiola High School and Adventist Center boys won 4-3.

The under-17 teams played in the first all state championship of the Bay Islands and their prize was a trip in June to play in El Salvador at the Central American high school championship. Screaming and cheering girls and boys, all wearing T-shirts with “Say No to Drugs and Yes to Education,” filled the stands of the stadium. [/private]
