Kenner Jackson was killed by a speeding motorcyclist.

Two more outrageous crimes rocked the Rock again in February! One upstanding citizen was killed by a reckless motorcyclist; another was assaulted at his shop.

Well over a hundred people attended a meeting March 9 called by Dr. Anna and other concerned citizens. Even the police were present. As usual there was a lot of “blah, blah, blah” and emotional outbursts. The representative of the National Police assured us of permanent police presence on the streets of Utila. Unfortunately, the Cobras, who have at least made a dent in the lawlessness, have left, proving the old proverb: “Nothing good lasts on Utila.”

There was mention of forming a community against crime. Unfortunately, all such great ideas usually fall by the wayside after a few weeks, and we are back to our pathetic wishy-washy backpaddling lawless mode.

Case in point: Fredrick Kenner Jackson Muñoz, an upstanding Utila citizen, teetotaler and excellent carpenter, involved with football and other positive things with Utila youth, was riding his motorcycle on the new airport road with his wife and baby. He was passing the Red Light bar when he collided with an intoxicated youth driving a motorcycle at excessive speed. He was taken to a hospital in Tegucigalpa, where he died February 26.

Having raced bikes in Europe and driven sports cars, I’m not exactly a wimp on the road. But on Utila I have experienced incidents so outrageous I thought I would have a heart attack.

I’ve heard the same story many times from visitors to Utila that they feared so much for their lives because of the outrageous conditions on our streets that they left the next day. I have seen old ladies coming from church getting pushed in the gutter by some local retard on a motorcycle.

Even though there have been several severe injuries, deaths and hit-and-runs (some at least killed themselves and not others) our so-called authorities still don’t think it’s necessary to put a stop to the insanity.

Local punks speeding sometimes three-abreast through the heavily populated streets of Utila, which are barely 20 feet wide, at 60-70 mph is not only idiotic, it’s criminal. Thanks to those imbeciles on their killing machines, it’s not a matter of if but when you will get hit.

Another decent Utilian fell victim to an outrageous crime February 15 at the hands of two local thugs who were both repeat offenders. Jack Cooper, a carpenter and Christian man who has a grocery shop and church in Camponado, was about to close shop at 9 p.m. when he was accosted by two men wearing masks. One ran away when Cooper put the lights on. The other, younger and stronger, threatened Cooper with a machete.

Cooper fought back. He was repeatedly choked, and his head was slammed into the cement. He managed to rip the mask off his assailant and recognized him as one of his neighbors. Cooper suffered a severe concussion and head injuries and lost Lps. 15,000 of his savings. Fortunately, he recovered from his injuries, although he said he still suffers from nightmares, as does Austin Bodden, who was hijacked in his boat in November (see December Voice).

When will we get authorities who do their job, which is to protect the public and our visitors from the slime of society?

Thanks to Utila United, a citizens anti-crime group, one of the perpetrators in the assault on Cooper is now serving a 10-year sentence. The other is still at large.

Support Utila United. Tomorrow you might be a victim.
